Richmondshire has a new councillor.
Jill McMullon (Independent) fills the vacancy in the District Council’s Hawes, High Abbotside and Upper Swaledale ward following the death of long serving councillor, John Blackie.
She polled 409 votes for the district council seat, beating: Pat Kirkbride (Conservative Party) with 231 votes; and Margaret Lowndes (Green Party) with 57 votes. The turnout was 46.62%.
The election also saw voters elect Yvonne Peacock (Conservative party) to the North Yorkshire County Council seat previously held by Councillor Blackie. She won the seat with 884 votes. The remaining candidates polled: Simon Crosby (Liberal Democrats) 204 votes; Kevin Foster (Green Party) 107 votes; and Jill McMullon (Independent) 741 votes. The turnout was 41.53%.
