Cancelling waste and recycling collections
We fully appreciate it's inconvenient and frustrating when we suspend waste and recycling collections. One of the biggest worries for our waste team is losing control of such large vehicles. They weigh in excess of 25 tonnes when full. Vehicles of this size and weight have a much greater stopping distance than a car, even in normal weather conditions.
In snowy or icy conditions, if our wagons get out of control and become stuck not only would it cause a major disruption to traffic, but there's the potential damage to property, other road users and fatal injuries to pedestrians.
Our crews will get back on track as soon as it’s safe to do so. We have to prioritise on missed waste collections, so residents should leave their waste bins out until they can be collected. With all resources diverted to catching up on missed waste, we are unfortunately unable to pick up recycling until the next collection, when we will collect all excess waste.
Further updates about collections will be posted on our disruption to services page.
