Order to tackle anti-social behaviour starts in Spring
An order to tackle serious anti-social behaviour in a Richmond natural beauty spot will start this Spring.
Final consultation on a Public Space Protection Order (PSPO) for the Batts and Falls area has begun.
The Police, Fire and Crime Commissioner along with North Yorkshire Police’s Chief Constable as well as local people are being asked to look at the details of the order and the area it covers before it is launched in April.
The Falls and the Batts attract local people as well as visitors from outside the area. Last year, especially during hot weather and at weekends, large groups gathered and caused significant problems through alcohol and drug consumption, littering, and lighting of barbecues.
The Order - which will give Police and council officers the power to move groups on, fine them for unruly behaviour and prevent certain activities – was approved by Richmondshire District Councillors earlier this year after widespread support from local people.
It will be in place for three years and the following restrictions will apply:
- Behaving in a way, including congregating in a group that causes or could cause harassment, annoyance, distress or harm
- Threatening or abusing people
- Continued consumption of alcohol when asked to stop by an authorised officer
- Being under the influence of controlled drugs or other psychoactive substance
- Throwing of objects likely to cause damage, injury or nuisance to people, animals or structure
- Lighting or being in control of a fire or barbecue
- No littering, not to throw down, drop or deposit and then leave litter in any place
