Vacant council properties
Richmondshire District Council has made the difficult decision to suspend all advertisements for vacant council properties.
This decision, which comes into force tomorrow (April 9), has been prompted by the significant restrictions in social mobility, many applicants not bidding due to current restrictions on moving home, and vacant properties not being repaired and ready for letting.
“If we continue to advertise and allocate vacant properties we increase the risk of seeing abnormal bidding patterns to the extent that some allocations may be seen as inequitable and unfair,” explained Colin Dales, Corporate Director (Operations).
“We will keep this position under review and as soon as we are confident that normal bidding patterns have resumed we will re-start adverts and allocations. This decision will not be back dated and any allocations already made will be honoured.”
He said similar actions are being taken by social housing landlords in neighbouring council areas. Anyone wishing to apply for future consideration for accommodation can still apply online via the North Yorkshire Home Choice website.
