A giant piece of land art is being created in Catterick Garrison to celebrate Yorkshire and its military connections.

Hundreds of people from the Garrison and across Richmondshire have had an input into the piece which features a Yorkshire rose and a soldier. It will be displayed on the football field in front of the Army Welfare Service on September 26 – the day the UCI Road World Championships come to Richmondshire.

One of the rose petals is rainbow coloured to match the UCI logo and others feature messages in languages from across the world, penned by the local community.

And this week Leader of Richmondshire District Council, Councillor Angie Dale, added her message of support to the artwork.

The Garrison HQ has worked with the Army Welfare Service and local artist Wendy May New to create the land art. The 80 foot Yorkshire rose is joined by the Garrison soldier – wearing a 50 foot beret and medals on his 60 foot wide chest!

Its creation has been supported by Help for Heroes, Catterick Army Cadets, Nepali veterans, Garrison Girl Guides, Gurkhas and scores of local crafters, military members and their families. It is hoped that local people will visit it on race day and sign their messages on the rose petals.

“We have had almost 100 people volunteering on this art – it’s been an amazing community effort,” said Community Support Development Worker, Neil Brimer.

“Each piece is hand made and to see our original ideas come to life though the skills of all these local people is incredible. We hope the world will see it when the race comes by and recognise the strong links between Catterick Garrison, cycling and the local community.”

And artist Wendi added; ” This art beats every other piece of large scale artwork I have been involved in. The number of people and groups involved as well as their support and skill has been overwhelming – without them this huge project would have lacked some of its shimmer and shine.”
