Richmondshire District Council

The first steps towards creating a carbon free District Council have been approved.

Richmondshire aims to have operations carbon zero by 2030 – and encourage the district as a whole to work in a more carbon neutral way.

Members of the authority’s Corporate Board last week (Tuesday January 15) gave approval to create a new post to take forward the climate change agenda and allocated £100,000 to cover its cost and an operational budget.

They were told that since the authority declared a climate emergency in July 2019, a working group has been set up and meetings with other partners undertaken. Cash has been provided towards the Yorkshire Dales National Park’s carbon sequestration project – the Tees Swale project; and a project to look into the delivery of electric charging points has been started. Officers are also looking at eliminating the use of single use plastic within the council and will be producing an action plan to identify the various steps that will be taken.
