Richmondshire District Council

A scheme to convert a former Methodist chapel into two flats is to benefit from £125,000.

The Bainbridge development will receive the cash from the district council’s Community Led Housing Fund.

The fund was set up in 2016 when the council was one of 148 authorities allocated government money to deliver community led housing schemes – it received £493,730 and has so far seen projects in Hudswell, Langthwaite, Askrigg and Bainbridge benefit.

Cash has been provided to help the projects fund design work, meet funding shortfalls and help with project management. The Bainbridge scheme will deliver two self contained affordable flats which will bring the total number of new properties enabled through the fund to nine.

Members of the Council’s Corporate Board this week (Tuesday February 11) also agreed to a new policy for using contributions from housing development across the district to assist in the delivery of affordable housing. This fund will also be available to help community led schemes - members heard how one emerging scheme for four new houses in Langthwaite could benefit from the additional funds.

Council Leader, Councillor Angie Dale said: “Enabling the development of new affordable housing is a key action in the drive to keep young families living and working in our more rural areas. By making these decisions we are taking practical steps to help our rural communities.”
