A £400,000 project is to create a pool of apprenticeships within the district council’s workforce.
Members of Richmondshire’s Corporate Board last night (Tuesday January 14) gave the go ahead to a two year scheme to bring in five trainees/apprentices. A co-ordinator will also be employed to oversee the project.
Councillors heard that by offering training local people may be encouraged to apply – and continue to live in the area.
“The council faces a number of challenges over the next few years and these will only be met if we have the right people with the right skills,” said Council Leader, Councillor Angie Dale.
“If we are to thrive in the future we must have a skilled and knowledgeable workforce and we believe by ‘growing our own’ we will ensure we have the capacity we need.”
She said a pool of trainees will be recruited who will be given experience of a number of areas of work before deciding which they want to focus on as an apprenticeship – that will include democratic services, environmental health, finance and procurement, IT, HR, business support and pest control.
“This scheme will create great career opportunities for local people – and could also provide progression for existing staff wanting to go down this path. It is a very exciting development for Richmondshire."
She said the co-ordinator will be in post this spring with the first batch of trainees recruited in the summer.
