Below is a business case study from a Richmondshire business who benefited from this year's Tour de Yorkshire event.
Business Name: Cottage in the Dales
Diane Howarth, owner of Cottage in the Dales said: “Given our location in the Yorkshire Dales National Park, the value from the international cycling events started 6 years ago in 2013, when the routes for the Tour de France Grand Depart 2014 were announced. Within 2 days we were fully booked! Future reservations have snowballed since then with us being full every year for the Tour de Yorkshire- and now two years in advance, as we are already fully booked for 2020 and almost full for 2021 too! The same thing happened with the UCI World Road Cycling Championships with guests wanting to book once the racing was announced to be coming to Yorkshire, which was well before the dates and routes were confirmed. Our guests really appreciate us sending them the newsletters, routes brochure & car stickers from Welcome to Yorkshire as they become available, to help whet their appetite further before their arrival at the cottages.
The TV coverage has helped showcase Yorkshire and the Yorkshire Dales so much, that Cottage in the Dales have benefitted further by extending their reach to new guests who hadn't been to the Dales before or for a long time. One guest who was born in Darlington, but lived down south, had been trying to encourage her partner to join her for a holiday in the Yorkshire Dales for a number of years. As soon as he saw the TV coverage, he agreed, and they have already stayed with us a for a second visit! Another guest from Australia was watching the coverage as they planned their UK holiday and found us as a result too. We look forward to seeing them soon."
