Applying for council housing
We let properties through a choice-based lettings scheme called North Yorkshire Home Choice. You can apply online.
North Yorkshire Home Choice is the result of us joining up with seven partners to advertise and offer empty homes on our waiting lists.
There are rules about who can apply to join the register and how applications are prioritised. These are set out in the North Yorkshire Home Choice Allocations Policy.
All applications are placed into one of four bands, emergency, gold, silver or bronze, based on an assessment of housing need.
From April 2022 if you are looking for housing in York you will need to register your interest directly with City of York Council.
This is because City of York Council have decided to leave North Yorkshire Home Choice to operate their own York-only housing register and York allocations policy. North Yorkshire Home Choice will continue to advertise properties in Craven, Ryedale, Hambleton, Richmondshire, Scarborough and Selby using the current North Yorkshire Home Choice Policy.
