Local smoke control areas
There are currently no smoke control areas in Richmondshire. Should you choose to burn solid fuel, please follow Defra's advice to help minimise the impact your burning will have on other people's health and the environment.
A local authority can declare the whole or part of its district a 'smoke control area' under the Clean Air Act 1993 which requires the use of an approved smokeless fuel or an exempt appliance.
Controls are still in place under the Environmental Protection Act 1990 (statutory nuisance powers) to ensure that nuisance is not caused to local residents.
