Sandbag deliveries
Making plans now will help you protect your property, as the council cannot commit to always being able to provide sandbags to houses or commercial premises during flooding incidents.
During a flooding incident we have to prioritise our resources and staff welfare. Staff will only be deployed to deliver sandbags if it is deemed safe to do so.
Normal working hours
Deliveries of sandbags will be made between 6.30am and 4.30pm, Monday to Friday.
Out of hours
Outside of normal working hours, you will need to contact the out of hours service on 01653 690738. Please note sandbags will normally only be delivered up to 9pm.
Number of sandbags provided
The council's stock of sandbags will be prioritised to responding to a threat of, or actual flood incidents in the following areas:
- Protection of council and domestic properties
A maximum of 6 sandbags per doorway will be provided. - Commercial premises
A maximum of 20 sandbags will be provided at a cost of £6.00 per bag, if resources are available to do so during normal working hours only.
Advice and further information
If you live in an area that is at risk of flooding, please be aware of what information is available and what you can do to help yourself. Many arrangements to protect properties can be made in advance.
Sandbags and alternatives can be purchased from builders merchants. Rubble bags filled with water and secured with plastic ties have proved to be a very effective defence against flood water. They are cheaper to purchase, take up less storage, can be moved quickly into place following warnings from the Environment Agency and are easily disposed of.
Another alternative is to purchase bags filled with a gel substance that swells up to help form a water-tight seal. These are however more costly than the rubble bags.
