Council tax charges

Council tax is used to pay for local services. The table below shows how much of your council tax pays for services from ourselves, North Yorkshire County Council (NYCC), NYCC adult social care, North Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Authority and the county's Police and Crime Commissioner. We collect the council tax on behalf of all these authorities.

Parish/Town Council precepts

Each parish or town council forecasts (generally around the early part of February each year) the amount of funding it will require for the following financial year. This funding, called their precept requirement, is requested to be collected by Richmondshire District Council on their behalf within residents council tax bills.

The calculation process starts when we provide each parish with their council tax base for the forthcoming financial year. This is simply the number of domestic properties (within each of the nine bands A to H) in a particular parish, adjusted by a number of locally defined factors to bring it to a band D equivalent.

Once we have been told of each parish’s financial requirements, we are then able to calculate what the band D council tax charge will be for that particular area, and from that, all of the other council tax charges for the various council tax bands within that parish.

For example, if the council tax base for a parish is 500 and their financial requirement (precept) is £2,000, their band D charge would be calculated as follows:

2,000/500 = £4.00 (band D charge parish only)

The charges across each of the other council tax bands are then calculated as a proportion of the band D charge in accordance with council tax legislation as follows:

Band Proportion  Band D equivalent  Precept amount
 A  6/9  of £4.00 =   £2.67
 B  7/9  of £4.00 =   £3.11
 C   8/9   of £4.00 =   £3.56
 D   9/9   of £4.00 =   £4.00
 E   11/9   of £4.00 =   £4.89
 F   13/9   of £4.00 =   £5.78
 G   15/9   of £4.00 =   £6.67
 H   18/9   of £4.00 =   £8.00
