SOURCES OF FUNDING FOR BUSINESSES IN RICHMONDSHIRE
Richmondshire District Council offers grants and loans to new and existing businesses wishing to expand within the Richmondshire District.
The NEW Richmondshire Business Support Grants Scheme
The Council has launched a new and improved grant scheme from 1st May 2008. This replaces the previous grant scheme by offering more eligibility and business benefits. In preparing the scheme we consulted extensively with local Business Associations to ensure it both meets the needs of businesses in Richmondshire, and develops our local economy.
The scheme has been specifically designed to help local businesses grow, boost their competitiveness and create job opportunities. Grants of up to £5,000 are now available for small and medium sized businesses with innovative business plans.
Any SME (small medium enterprise) in the following business sectors located anywhere within our boundaries can apply for 50 per cent of a given project’s cost, up to a maximum grant contribution of £5,000. Applications will be appraised on their individual merits, on a first come, first served basis.
Businesses in the following sectors will be eligible:
- Food and drink businesses
- Eating establishments
- Supply chain businesses
- Manufacturing and Engineering
- Information Technology/Digital/Media
- Agricultural diversification
- Tourist Accommodation premises (only projects that include enabling use of the Tourism Partnership’s ‘Destination Management System’ (DMS), or enable ‘Quality Assured’ status are eligible)

Renaissance Market Towns - Business Grant Scheme
Richmondshire District Council (RDC) has been successful in securing a pot of funding from Yorkshire Forward that businesses can apply to if they are located in the Renaissance Market Town (RMT) area of Richmond and Catterick Garrison.
The Grant is designed to provide financial assistance to eligible businesses located in the RMT area, to stimulate private investment and to complement other initiatives that are already underway in the area. Grants will be awarded where there is clear evidence that investment in capital equipment or adaptation/improvement to premises will result in one or more of the following:
- advances in process and product innovation within the business
- an overall increase in sales turnover in the business
- a first time VAT registration
- safeguarding the quality/diversity of employment opportunities within the RMT area
- the creation of direct new jobs
- private investment in improvements to the physical fabric of Gallowfields Trading Estate
- widened scope and appeal of the retail offering in Richmond
- a reduction in CO2 emissions
For more information on the grant scheme please read the Guidance Notes.
A copy of the Application Form can also be downloaded.
Any businesses interested in applying for a grant should phone Sue on 01748 827038 or email sue.kelly@richmondshire.gov.uk to discuss their project further.
The Heritage Partnership Scheme
The Richmond Heritage Partnership Scheme primarily seeks to address the problem of empty spaces within the Town Centre falling into disrepair through being left empty with little or no maintenance to the buildings. The scheme gives grant assistance to building owners/leaseholders, with the aim of bringing back into economic use these empty spaces, with a sympathetic programme of restoration, and replacement of architectural features, combined with internal conversion of empty space into high quality office accommodation. Associated environmental/public realm type improvements will also be grant aided.
