The Census is a ten yearly survey of the whole population of Great Britain. The 2001 Census took place on 29 April 2001.
 
The information from the Census is used by central and local government, health authorities and other organisations to target their resources and plan services.
 
The Office for National Statistics is responsible for planning, undertaking and providing the results of the Census.
