Fixed Penalty Notices
Litter in a public place is unsightly, dangerous to animals and an offence.
A person is guilty of an offence if he throws down, drops or otherwise deposits any litter in any place to which the Environmental Protection Act 1990 applies, and leaves it. In accordance with the Act, Richmondshire District Council issues £80 Fixed Penalty Notices (reduced to £60 if paid within 14 days) for the offence of leaving litter.
Litter includes materials often associated with eating, drinking and smoking that are improperly discarded and left by members of the public. This includes cigarette butts and chewing gum. Always use a litter bin or take your waste home.
There are many litter bins in Richmondshire. Each bin is emptied a minimum of once per fortnight.
