Hackney Carriage and Private Hire
The main difference between Hackney Carriages and Private Hire Vehicles:
Hackney Carriage vehicles (Taxis): can ply for hire on a taxi rank or be flagged down in the street. The fares are set by the Council.
Private Hire vehicles: must be pre-booked, the vehicles are not permitted to ply for hire on a taxi rank or be flagged down in the street.
To become a driver of a Hackney Carriage or Private Hire Vehicle the following procedures must be followed:
Each applicant must complete an Enhanced Criminal Records Bureau Check and a Group 2 Medical. Application forms for the above can be obtained from Richmondshire District Council's Community Offices or by contacting the Licensing Section. Applicants must have held a full UK driving licence for at least 3 years.
