Radon

Skip main content Skip main content
Radon is a naturally occurring radioactive gas which has no colour, smell or taste. It is formed by the decay of uranium in rocks and soil. It can then seep into buildings where it is inhaled into the lungs.

The Health Protection Agency recommend that radon levels should be below 200Bq m3 in domestic premises and 400Bq m3 for commercial premises. Exposure to radon above this level over many years slightly increases the risk of developing lung cancer.

Radon testing can be carried out by the Health protection Agency for a small charge.

For further information about radon and radon testing contact the Health Protection Agency on 01235 831600

If radon is found to be above the action level then Richmondshire District Council can provide advice about necessary building work. This can range from simple measures such as improving ventilation to installing a sump system.
