departmental structure of the County Council within County Hall,

Primary School Admission
If you have a child of compulsory school age (between five and
16 years of age), you have a legal duty to make sure they receive
full-time education that is suitable for their age, ability and
aptitude. Under the Education Act 2002, we must make arrangements
to help you decide which school you would prefer your child to go
to. Your Local Education Office will be able to advise you which is
the normal primary school is serving your home address. You

Secondary School Admissions

quality education from 11-16 (or 11-18 in some schools)
with Selective Education available at Ripon Grammar
School, Skipton Girls' High School and Ermysted's Grammar

School Admissions Appeals
If you are refused a place at your preferred school you have
the right to appeal against the decision under the School Standards
and Framework Act 1998 (Section 94) as amended by the Education Act
2002. This is your opportunity to present your reasons for
preferring a particular school to an independent appeals panel who
will decide whether your reasons are strong enough to overturn the
decision of the Local Education Authority (LEA) or Governing Body
(in the case of Voluntary Aided schools). For further information
