Core Strategy

Skip main content Skip main content
The Council is preparing a Core Strategy for the Local Development Framework. This will set out the overall vision and objectives to guide future growth in the District, outside of the National Park.  At this stage it is about overarching strategy and direction, with site specific policies being covered in later LDF documents.

We are making progress towards a final draft Core Strategy. This has evolved through a set of Issues and Options documents (Nov 2009), a Preferred Core Strategy (Jun 2010) and a Local Strategy Statement (Feb 2011). We have consulted extensively on these stages.

Latest Core Strategy Consultation

We recently consulted on some additional changes to the Core Strategy, including a new Policy CP14. This provides criteria to judge the suitability of development proposals ahead of formal site allocations. Preferred strategic directions for development are proposed for Leyburn, the Garrison Area and Richmond. The consultation period ran for 6 weeks from 16 September 2011.

The next stage is to produce the final version of the Core Strategy, which we are aiming to publish in early 2012, prior to submission and examination.

LDF Core Strategy Timetable

This timetable (as at Nov 2011) summarises the major remaining milestones to adoption of the LDF Core Strategy.  It is ambitious and is dependent on the delivery of a number of important evidence base tasks, including traffic modeling and housing viability work to ensure that the Council’s approach is sound. The Council is alert to the changing legislative context and expects to review this programme in the light of changes brought forward under the Localism Bill and other proposals.
