A campaign to find
out what local people think of a major new development plan for
Richmondshire has taken to the road.
Advertising hoardings to publicise the
District Council’s ‘Local Development Framework’ are being taken
around the district throughout this week.
Two giant posters depicting what the area
might look like without controls over developments are being driven
into numerous locations including Richmond, Catterick, Colburn,
Leyburn, Middleham, Melsonby and Middleton Tyas.
The District Council wants to know what people
think of its plan for the area outside the Yorkshire Dales National
Park – which will guide development until 2026.
The first part of the plan is the ‘Core
Strategy’ which sets out a vision of the area for the next 16
years. The draft version is currently under scrutiny – once
adopted it will be supported by a series of documents including a
proposals map showing where future developments will be placed.
“We hope this campaign will make people turn
their heads – shock them into realising that plans for some
developments can get through because they don’t tell us what they
think,” said Council Leader, Councillor Fleur Butler
(pictured).
“Our draft strategy gives the right balance
between future development and keeping what’s best in
Richmondshire. But we must make sure that developments are in
the right place so people can afford to live and work here as well
as visit.”

details of the consultation exercise, and the preferred Core
Strategy. It has also been circulated to over 400 people and
groups who have already expressed an interest.
The advertising hoardings will be in North
Richmondshire today (Thursday); and Richmond and Catterick on
Friday and Saturday.
