Eleven Hambleton and Richmondshire
teams came out in pole position at the annual North Yorkshire Youth
Games this month.
The young sports stars took first place in
swimming, disability cricket, gymnastics, sportsability, football,
hockey, tag rugby and tennis.
The two districts entered more than 17 teams
into the July 3 event held at Queen Margaret’s School in Escrick
and the David Lloyd Tennis Centre York.
The 12th annual Youth Games capped off a
‘Golden Fortnight’ of sport. It started in June with the
North Yorkshire School Games swimming finals in Harrogate, and saw
cricket, badminton, volleyball, gymnastics finals before the
closing event on July 3.
It also saw North Yorkshire selected as one of
nine pilot areas for the School Games which will be rolled out
nationally next year.
Over the fortnight around 1500 young people
competed in the finals - 800 of them on the final
Sunday. Their journey began six months ago when
competitions were opened up to young people across schools in North
Yorkshire. Thousands of young people aged between 8 and 16
competed in intra and interschool competitions to find the best
representative teams for their district.
