Young people from Richmondshire are
being urged to sign up to the district’s Youth
Council.
The council is the ‘voice’ of 11-19 year olds
supporting youth organisations and organising a range of events
throughout the year - including the popular music festival, Castle
Calling.
Nominations for new members of the 30 strong
council are open until the end of this year.
The Richmondshire District Youth Council was
set up three years ago, responding to young people’s desires to
have ‘somewhere to go and something to do’. It has given out
nearly £10,000 in grants to young people or youth
organisations.
It works with the District Council, County
Council, Local Strategic Partnership, local crime and disorder
partnership and the voluntary sector, helping organisations to make
decisions about policies and services, directly affecting the lives
of hundreds of young people across the district.
“The youth council has become a group young
people wish to be a part of – it is seen by young people as making
a difference,” said Youth Council Chairman, Max Coates.
“Such is its influence one of its members, Ben
Lacey, now sits on the National Youth Council. We hope young
people will be encouraged to get involved and be a voice for their
district.”
Grant aid has supported many groups and
activities including: the Park Festival 2008; Risedale Youth Club –
circus skills club equipment; Wensleydale Youth Club – DJ
equipment; Youth Ability – supported disabled children’s trips by
bus; local drama group – costumes; Scouts groups – renovation of
club building; Leyburn youth shelter; arts activities – film making
projects, music projects; and by giving grants to individual young
people.
Nominations forms are available from http://www.richmondshire.gov.uk/
or from any of the district’s youth centres.
