YOUNGSTERS MEND THEIR HEALTH
Youngsters in Hambleton are being given the
chance to MEND their ways!
A new course can help them transform their
health with the support of their families.
The ten week MEND (Mind, Exercise,
Nutrition…Do it!) programme for overweight 7-13 year olds kicks off
in Thirsk next month (April) - and is one of over 250 currently
running across the UK.
Hambleton and Richmondshire District Councils
are working in partnership with NHS North Yorkshire and thanks to
funding from the Big Lottery Fund 12 free places - worth up to £400
per child - are being offered to families on a first come first
served basis.
“The MEND Programme is a really positive
experience for the whole family,” said Lesley Williams, MEND
Programme Manager in Hambleton and Richmondshire.
“Many youngsters who take part change body
shape, reduce their waistlines and achieve a healthier weight for
their age and height, which results not only in them being
healthier and fitter but also gaining in self esteem and
confidence.
“MEND is also a great way to make lasting
friendships. We hope that many more families will take up this
opportunity to turn their lives around and apply for a place on the
programme.”
The MEND Programme is the UK’s largest healthy
lifestyle programme for overweight children and their parents and
aims to help people understand and change unhealthy attitudes
towards food and fitness. Held as twice weekly sessions and
delivered by specially trained health and fitness professionals,
the unique course helps children become fitter, healthier and
happier and delivers long term results. The course gives
families the skills and information to make healthier food choices
and children join in fun activities designed to improve their self
confidence and self esteem as well as their physical fitness.
Families interested in taking part should contact Lesley
Williams on 01609 767242, lesley.williams@hambleton.gov.uk or visit

and click on ‘Join a MEND Programme’. A parent or carer must
accompany each child to every session.
