Sixth form
students from across Richmondshire were given vital road safety
lessons today (Wednesday) – from a couple whose lives were changed
by a car accident.
Helen Strickland was left in a wheelchair
after being forced off the road in her car by a young driver in
another vehicle 11 years ago.
Along with her husband, Neil, the
Richmondshire Road Safety and Travel Awareness Officer for North
Yorkshire County Council, she took part in the ‘Learn and Live’
event at the Georgian Theatre.
The event was organised by Neil in partnership
with the Hambleton and Richmondshire Community Safety Partnership
as part of an on going campaign to tackle road safety issues.
Members of the police and fire service also took part in the hard
hitting event attended by 180 students from Richmond School.
“This event contains some hard hitting
messages – aimed at making our young people think,” explained
Neil.
“Whether a passenger or a driver, their safety
is our concern and we hope that our messages stay with them for a
long time to come. When Helen set off in her car to go
shopping all those years ago she never dreamed it would be the last
time that she would drive a car – later that day she was involved
in a serious road accident that left her wheelchair bound.
“We all hope that our young drivers will take
on board today’s messages and think about the consequences of their
actions whilst driving.”
