Local people are being asked for their
views on a new document which sets out local development priorities
for Richmondshire.
Richmondshire District Council is seeking
views on future development in the eastern part of the district -
outside of the Yorkshire Dales National Park. It stretches
from near Darlington in the north and includes Richmond, Catterick
Garrison and Leyburn in the south.
The authority’s Local Development Framework
(LDF) Core Strategy will set the future priorities for building new
homes and workplaces in the towns and villages up until 2026.
When work began it needed to be consistent with the development
targets set in the Yorkshire and Humber Regional Spatial Strategy
(RSS) – but this is now changing.
“Central Government wants to remove ‘top down’
guidance, and encourage local decision making,” said Councillor
Melva Steckles.
“The Localism Bill will put an end to the RSS
and the LDF must be written without it.
However what has been lost with the RSS must
be replaced so that the Council can progress the LDF’s Core
Strategy.”
She said a new short document - the Local
Strategy Statement - has been written proposing local priorities
for development, along with the evidence needed to justify
them. This will include the targets for the number of new
homes and where they should be built.
The Local Strategy Statement has been
published on the Council’s website and sent to over 400 local
organisations and people who have expressed an interest in the
future of local communities. Check out
