Unemployment in Richmondshire has
fallen to less than one per cent for the first time in more than
five years.
Melva Steckles, Leader of Richmondshire District Council, said:
"It's no secret that economic conditions are tough, not just in
Richmondshire, but across the country – so it is really encouraging
to see that unemployment has fallen in our district.
"0.9 per cent is one of the lowest rates in the country, and
that reflects not just the Council's innovative business support
schemes, but also the work of businesses across Richmondshire that
contribute so much to our local economy."
The latest figures came as owners of Richmondshire tourism
businesses – one of the district's key industries – met at
Simonstone Hall in Hawes to discuss new grants and marketing
opportunities.
The Council-organised meeting – attended by more than 50
business representatives – heard about new developments including
the regional Destination Management System which could boost the
tourism industry and the wider economy even further.
Employment figures in Richmondshire are measured on a monthly
basis. Unemployment in August 2007 was 1.1 per cent. It has been
steady at exactly one per cent since September 2007, and fell to
0.9 per cent in April 2008.

Tourism business representatives from across Richmondshire
attend a meeting at Simonstone Hall in Hawes (on May 15) to discuss
the latest developments in the industry.
