An innovative approach to providing
tourist information across Richmondshire has been given the go
ahead by district councillors.
Two Tourist Information Points will be set up
in Richmond and Leyburn – within tourism businesses.
The ‘points’ – in a bed and breakfast house
and a coffee shop – will replace the current council run centres in
the towns.
Members of Richmondshire District Council’s
Strategy Board last night (Tuesday March 15) agreed that by
transferring the centres into the private sector information
services for visitors will continue.
The changes are part of the authority’s budget
savings programme – it will release more than £90,000 for the
authority.
“The centres will move away from being council
run to being managed by the private sector and supported by
volunteers – but still maintaining a presence in each market town,”
said Councillor Melva Steckles, Spokesperson for Strong
Neighbourhoods.
“And we hope to see more TIP’s created in
Richmondshire and Leyburn if there is local support for that.”
Strategy Board members heard that a range of
organisations across the district had been consulted by officers
who drew up a 13 page report on the options. They
supported the creation of a TIP in the existing location in
Richmond - as part of a coffee shop and retail outlet; and within
the Dales Haven B and B in Leyburn. They also agreed to
support and encourage the creation of further TIP’s in the two
towns.
The changes will be implemented as soon as is
practicable.
