Crimefighters have drawn up a special
‘takeaway'
menu to deter Christmas thieves.
Members of the Hambleton and Richmondshire
Community Safety Partnership are urging residents to be extra
vigilant and follow their special menu of hints and tips to keep
the festive season safe – and unspoiled by criminals.
Its new Christmas leaflet – written in the style of a takeaway
menu - promotes a crime free December. For starters the
leaflet covers shopping and keeping cash safe. Main course
and desserts covers security both at home and in the car.
And there is advice on staying safe when out
at night drinking and travelling home.
The top ten tips are:
- keep your purse/wallet close to your body - and don’t carry too
much cash with you
- use cash machines in daylight and preferably inside the
bank
- park cars in busy, well lit areas near CCTV cameras
- if you must leave presents in the car, leave them out of sight
in the boot and keep the car locked
- don’t leave anything in your car when it is parked overnight –
63% of thefts occur outside the home
- at home keep presents out of sight and if you ‘hide’ or store
larger items, such as bikes, in outbuildings make sure they
are secure
- don’t advertise new goods by leaving empty boxes stacked up
outside – dispose of packing carefully
- if you go out for the evening make it look like someone is at
home – leave lights and the radio on and don’t leave curtains
open
- keep keys out of sight – away from doors, windows and
letterboxes
- never leave the car warming up – an unattended vehicle could be
stolen
