A new system to ‘star’ rate food
businesses is to be introduced in Richmondshire.
District Councillors have agreed to introduce
the Food Hygiene Rating Scheme after hearing that 81% of businesses
supported it.
The Food Standards Agency initiative will help
consumers choose where to eat out or shop for food by giving
information about the hygiene standards in restaurants, pubs,
cafes, takeaways and hotels. Supermarkets and other food shops are
also included.
The rating will take the form of a certificate
showing stars – 5 stars for the best and no stars for the
worst.
The Agency has allocated the council a grant
of £10,000 to implement the new system.
“It will not cost businesses anything and will
result in very little extra work by the council once it is
implemented,” said Councillor Clive World, Spokesperson for Safe
Places.
“But it benefit the consumer considerably as
they will have access to information for the first time about the
standard of hygiene and food safety in Richmondshire food
businesses.”
