More than 280 athletes from across
Hambleton and Richmondshire put their sporting talents to the test
this month.

They took part in the annual North Yorkshire
Youth Games held this year at Queen Margarets School in Escrick and
the David Lloyds Tennis Centre in York on July 4.
Twenty seven teams represented the two areas,
competing across 11 sports - hockey, girls football, rugby union,
netball, gymnastics, cricket, tennis, swimming, sportsability,
cheerleading, and pom dance.
And they took seven first places, six runner
up positions and seven thirds.
The teams were selected from school festivals,
club development squads or open trials with the support of the
Sports Governing Bodies, Hambleton and Richmondshire District
Councils, Thirsk and Risedale School Sports Partnerships, and the
Voluntary Sector Clubs.
“The Games are a fantastic way to get young
people active and to encourage them to take part in sport, giving
them the opportunity to experience a large-scale sports event
whilst fulfilling their sporting potential,” said Councillor Peter
Wilkinson, Hambleton District Council’s Cabinet member for
Health.
“I was very proud of all the teams they were
really inspiring.”
And Councillor Jim Fryer, Richmondshire’s
Spokesperson for Healthy Lives added: “This was a great week for
recognising sporting achievements - the recent Richmondshire Local
Sports Council’s Junior Sports Awards, seeing this number of young
people taking part in a countywide event and so many of the
Richmondshire and Hambleton youngsters bringing home trophies.”
Hambleton scored more points than any other
Local Authority to win the ‘Fair Play’ award in recognition of the
general attitude and conduct of the teams and supporters at the
event.
