A national food hygiene rating scheme could be coming
to Hambleton and Richmondshire.
The Food Standards Agency - in partnership
with the district councils – is looking to roll out the ‘scores on
the doors’ initiative across the two districts.
But the authorities want to know what local
people and business leaders think of the scheme before they give it
the go ahead.
They are being asked to complete a simple on
line questionnaire by October 10.
The food rating scheme provides consumers with
information about hygiene standards in food premises – it is
designed to help them make informed choices about where they buy
and eat food. Restaurants, takeaways, cafes, sandwich
shops, pubs, hotels, supermarkets and other retail food outlets are
given a rating of zero to five. They are awarded
following inspections by local authority environmental health
officers looking at how hygienically the food is handled, the
condition of premises and the management of food safety.
Currently more than 200 local authorities
across the UK operate the scheme with the agency working towards a
national approach to avoid different arrangements in different
areas, and to ensure consistency for consumers and clarity for
businesses.
