Community safety officers targeted
holidaymakers and day trippers last weekend in the final leg of
their summer safe driving campaign.
Together with road safety group, 95 Alive,
they spent time at Leeming Bar services on the A1 over the bank
holiday.
Members of the Hambleton and Richmondshire
Community Safety Partnership spoke to services users about the most
common causes of accidents - including drink driving,
speeding, the use of mobile phones while driving, checking child
car seats and the importance of wearing seatbelts.
“We all know how important it is to get a few
simple messages across and that if people take them on board we
will save lives,” said North Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service
Station Manager David Pitt from Richmond.
“These action days are great opportunities for
the public and community safety partners to engage in an activity
which will inform learning on both sides about road safety issues
in their community.”
He said a large proportion of all drink drive
crashes occur within three miles of the start of the journey.
And many child car seats are simply incorrectly
fitted.
They must use the right car seat until they
reach 135 centimetres in height or the age of 12 – and the type of
seat depends on their weight. Make sure:
- you follow the manufacturer's instructions
- the seat is placed tightly in the adult seat and the seat belt
passes through all the correct slots
- the adult seat belt buckle isn't bent over or resting on the
frame of your child's seat
- you don't change the adult seat belt or the child's seat to
make it fit
