Community safety experts are turning the spotlight on the
hidden victims of love.
As Valentine’s Day draws near a poster
highlighting domestic abuse is being issued.
As most people celebrate February 14 with
romance, flowers and chocolates, members of the Hambleton and
Richmondshire Community Safety Partnerships want to ensure the day
does not turn to one of bruises, violence and abuse.
Posters bearing the words ‘Don’t be on the
receiving end’ and ‘Not everyone gets what they want on Valentines
Day’ have been distributed across the two districts.
“Valentine’s Day is meant to be a time of
romance, but for many people it will be a time of fear and pain,”
said Sarah Hill, Director of Independent Domestic Abuse
Services.
“It’s not easy to accept that someone you love
can behave aggressively. And because they cannot explain a
partner’s behaviour, they may assume that they are to
blame.
“We are here to assure them they are
not. We are here to listen and ready to help – or to
provide some shelter.”
Anyone needing help or advice should ring
Independent Domestic Abuse Services on 01904 646630.
- Over two women per week are killed by current
or ex-partners, and one in four women in the UK will experience
domestic violence in their lifetime.
