Road safety "key priority" for community safety partnership
New speed detection equipment will help Richmondshire Community Safety Partnership (RCSP) tackle one of its top priorities – road safety.
RCSP's Road Safety Task Group works to identify projects that will help promote safer roads in Richmondshire, working with others – including the 95 Alive partnership – to emphasise the safety message to all residents and visitors.
Its ultimate aim is to reduce the number of accidents on Richmondshire's roads.
The equipment includes four flashing speed matrices and two data recorders. Twenty sites around the district have been identified, and the new equipment will be used to constantly monitor these areas.
Councillor Michael Heseltine, Chairman of the RCSP Road Safety Task Group said: "We have recently purchased new speed equipment that will help our partners to look at strategic locations. In many cases, they will be deployed at the request of the community itself.
The speed matrices collect data on types and speeds of vehicle, and warn drivers by a flashing sign of the speed they are travelling. It is a preventative measure, but speeding drivers should be warned that formal action may follow.
The simple message – and one that every driver should bear in mind whenever they get behind the wheel – is 'speed kills'."
The launch of the speed matrices follows the publication of figures which showed a 23 per cent fall in crime in Richmondshire over the last three years – placing the RCSP as the best when compared to its most similar partnerships in the country.
