Richmondshire Leisure Trust is
bursting with pride!
For its ‘Burst’ holiday activity project has
been awarded the prestigious Inspire mark - the badge of the London
2012 Inspire programme.
The award recognises the work being done to
inspire young people to take up sport and boost participation as
part of the London 2012 campaign.
The activity programme - which runs in every
school holiday - contains a wide range of sporting taster sessions
for both mainstream sports such as football to less popular sports
such as archery and handball.
The London 2012 Inspire programme officially
recognises outstanding non-commercial projects and events inspired
by the Games and offers a once in a lifetime opportunity to be part
of London 2012. The programme aims to use the power of the Games to
inspire change across the UK.
During Burst’s summer 2010, 17 different
Olympic sports and one Paralympic sport were on offer as well as a
multi-skill activity Burst camp and an outdoor adventure
week. Children from all over the district took part with many
continuing to enjoy the range of sports they tried throughout the
holidays with one of the sporting clubs in the district.
Seb Coe, Chair, London Organising Committee of
the Olympic Games and Paralympic Games said:
“The Burst programme is
encouraging young people to
fulfil their potential. I am proud that with the help of partners
such as the Richmondshire Leisure Trust we are delivering on our
vision to use the power of the Olympic and Paralympic Games to
boost participation in sport.”
The Burst holiday activity programme,
supported by Yorkshire Gold, the regions London 2012 Committee, is
set to continue with its development following both a successful
Big Lottery funding application and the developing partnership work
with the Catterick Leisure Centre, Army Welfare Service and
Surestart Children Centres as well as clubs and facilities in the
district.
“The Inspire Mark is something that the Burst
holiday activity programme is proud to have attained and marks its
true and ultimate aim of inspiring the youth of Richmondshire into
being active and sporting,” added Matt Prosser, Sports Development
Co-ordinator from Richmondshire Leisure Trust.
