Householders across Hambleton and Richmondshire are being urged to reduce food waste.
And prizes are up for grabs by simply making a pledge as part of the ‘Love Food Hate Waste’ campaign.
The District Councils are supporting the campaign which aims to cut the amount of food wasted by householders, save money and help the environment.
Across the UKit is estimated that £12 billion worth of food is thrown out every year – families with children waste around £50 a month. And it is thrown out because it is allowed to go off without being opened or too much is prepared.
Pledgers are asked to take simple steps to reduce food waste - by planning meals and checking stocks, understanding best ‘before’ and ‘use by’ dates and portion sizes and by creative cooking.
Everyone taking part will be entered into a competition to win: 'Chocolate and Sugarworks' day at the Nigel Brown Cookery Academy; food and beer cookbook by Richard Fox and a case of Morrissey -Fox Blonde Ale; a hamper per month for six months from the Kirkgate Farmers Markets in Leeds; Yorkshire Tea gift pack from Taylors of Harrogate and organic hampers from Wildstar Organics in South Yorkshire.
To make a pledge, simply complete the pledge form on www.northyorks.gov.uk/pledge by the end of November.
