Views on plans to extend the
conservation area boundary in Catterick Village are being
sought.
Local people are being asked to comment on
proposals to extend the conservation area in four areas: the green
space in front of the Health Centre, the area to the west of the
castle mound, the area south of the Beckside between numbers 9 and
13, and the area west end of the village between Garth Meadows and
the Manor House development.
The proposals were included in the 2008
Appraisal and Management Plan for the village. To be included in
the Conservation Area, the areas need to contribute to the
architectural or historic interest of the village. The main
effects of being included within a conservation area are:
- The district council is under a duty to prepare proposals to
ensure the preservation or enhancement of the area
- Consent must be obtained from the council for the demolition of
any building in the area
- Special publicity must be given to planning applications for
development in the area
- In carrying out any functions under the planning Acts -
particularly in determining applications for planning permission
and listed building consent - the council and the Secretary to
State are required to take into account the desirability of
preserving or enhancing the character or appearance of the
area
- Six weeks’ notice must be given to the council before work is
carried out to any tree in the area
- A slightly more restrictive range of permitted development for
residential properties.
Comments on the new boundary should be sent to

by September 1.
