Children
staying in Richmondshire’s hostel for the homeless have brand new
equipment to keep them busy!
George Nikling House received £100 at the
‘Working Together in Colburn Neighbourhood Project’ awards this
month.
A Community Chest Fund was established by the
project organisers earlier this year, to provide small awards to
community groups in recognition of the contribution they make to
community life in Colburn.
A total of £1190 was handed out to help fund:
Tea and Saturday Dances; Oak Tree Court; Colburn Allotments
Association; Colburn Credit Union; 1st Colburn Guides;
Colburn Craft Club; St Cuthbert’s Church; Colburn Whist and Bingo;
Colburn Am Hams and George Nickling House.
The groups have used their awards to continue
providing their activities and to purchase new play equipment
The ‘fund’ was set up as a result of a
successful bid for funding from the Workers Educational Association
by Richmondshire Council for Voluntary Services - to support the
development of skills in community work and progress projects
identified as part of the Colburn project, such as the community
website and newsletter.
The cash also saw six training sessions
developed including: Funding Advice & Information; Community
Websites; Community Research; Running a Community Organisation;
Newsletters; and Using Social Media.
Larger grants have also been made to the
Colburn After School Rugby (£500) Colburn Breakfast Club (£1000)
and Colburn Youth Group (£1000) from the Neighbourhood Project
funding pot.
The money will be used to provide equipment
and refreshments for the Youth Group, equipment for the Rugby
coaching sessions and will help towards continuing the School
Breakfast club for another academic year.
