A new homelessness prevention scheme
for Hambleton and Richmondshire has been launched.
It will see two homelessness prevention teams
set up by the end of the year – based in Northallerton and Richmond
– and homelessness surgeries established across the districts.
Officers from charity, Foundation, are working
alongside the District Council’s Housing Options team to resettle
homeless people into permanent homes more quickly.
“The scheme is designed to reduce homelessness
across both districts and to work alongside partner agencies to
contribute to local strategic housing plans,” said Jill Boak from
Foundation.
“We will focus on early intervention - where
possible in the form of housing support, which will develop or
sustain a person's capacity to live independently within the
community and therefore prevent the loss of their home or
tenancy.”
Aimed at people aged 18+, the scheme is aimed
at people experiencing difficulties in their housing situation, who
are in transition from actual or threatened homelessness, or who
are homeless or at risk of becoming homeless. Applicants can be
tenants, home owners or homeless.
It will also be aimed at people moving from
temporary accommodation into permanent accommodation and will
prioritise those who are living in temporary accommodation
designated by the district councils. And it is designed to
provide short term (maximum of two years) support.
The scheme has been commissioned by the
Supporting People team at North Yorkshire County Council on behalf
of the North Yorkshire Supporting People Partnership.
Foundation is an established charity with a
strong track record of working with vulnerable groups across the
North of England - it has managed the Single Young Homeless project
in Thirsk for several years.
