Dog owners are being urged to keep
Hambleton and Richmondshire clean this summer – by clearing up
after their pets.
The District Councils are supporting Dogs
Trust - the UK’s largest dog welfare charity – to highlight this
weeks National Poop Scoop Week (July 25 - 31) by encouraging dog
owners to ‘Grab it, Bag it and Bin it.’
Failing to pick up after your dog can result
in an on the spot fine of £50 – but non payment can see it rise to
£1000 if the case goes to court.
“While the majority of owners are responsible
and pick up after their dog, a significant number are still giving
dogs a bad name and each year thousands of complaints are received
by local authorities about dog mess,” said Hambleton and
Richmondshire Street Scene Manager, John Proud.
“Dog fouling is a problem which Hambleton and
Richmondshire are determined to tackle. We will not have it
spoiling our parks, pavements and public spaces.
“We get lots of complaints from parents whose
children have got dog foul on their shoes while playing in the park
and from mums who have come home from town with it on the wheels of
prams. Cleaning up after your dog is simple and is the only
way to ensure a summer free from this nuisance.”
He said the ‘grab it, bag it and bin
it’ plan is simple to follow:
GRAB IT - keep a supply of
plastic bags near the dog's lead – scented nappy bags make great
poop scoops. Simply insert your hand in the plastic bag and pick up
your dogs waste.
BAG IT - carefully turn the
plastic bag inside out and the dogs mess will be 'bagged'.
BIN IT - dispose of the bag
in a 'Poop' bin. Dog waste can be put into any public litter bin if
a specific dog waste bin is not provided.
The district councils are also keen to hear
from members of the public who have information about these
offences - particularly with photographs or video of persistent
offenders.
