The military have been called in by organisers of next month’s music festival in Richmond.

Volunteers from Catterick Garrison will be on hand at ‘Castle Calling’ – when 2,500 young people are expected to listen to 12 hours of live music.

Sunderland based rock band, the Futureheads, are headlining the Richmond Castle based event on August 20.  And the four man group will be supported by a host of local talent.

Tickets for the festival – the second to be held within the castle walls - are already selling fast.

“Last year’s inaugural event saw 500 young people spend five hours listening to live music,” said Simon Fletcher of Richmondshire District Council.

“But 2010 is bigger and better – 2,500 people are expected to attend, 21 bands will play, a range of free workshops are being staged and it has doubled in length…. to 12 hours!

“Tickets are selling fast and we have support coming in from organisations across the district.  We are very grateful to Catterick Garrison for adding their help.”

Garrison Quartermaster Major Steve Tester’s team will erect tents at the event to be used as first aid tents, changing accommodation for the bands and at the entrance.

Castle Calling is the brainchild of the Richmondshire District Youth Council in answer to a call from young people seeking something to occupy their long summer holidays.   The Futureheads, will be joined by Darwin Deez, Johnny Foreigner, Utah Saints, the Cheek, Little Comets, Detroiot Social Club, Young rebel set, Tubelords, Minnaars, The Kabeedies and Only Animals on the two stages.   And there are free workshops on banner painting, Manga (Japanese comics), animation and photography throughout the day.

Richmondshire Community Safety Partnership will be promoting drinking and speeding initiatives and health officers will be on hand to discuss health issues.   And there will be subsidised buses to bring young people into the town centre from the Dales – booking is essential as places are limited.

The event is open for anyone from the age of 12 upwards – and is strictly alcohol free. Gates open at 1pm with the first act on stage at 1.15pm.  The Futureheads will close the event from 9.45 – 11pm.

Tickets, priced £7 in advance (£10 on the gate) are available from http://www.castlecalling.co.uk/; http://www.wegottickets.com/; or www.seetickets.com
