Community safety experts are uniting
with local retailers to support a national campaign to highlight
noise nuisance.
Members of the Hambleton and Richmondshire
Community Safety Partnership are backing ‘Noise Action Week’ (May
23 – 27) which aims to raise awareness of the problems caused by
noise - and the solutions available to tackle it.
They are setting up stalls in two local shops
to provide practical information and advice to local shoppers - at
Tesco in Northallerton on May 23 and Tesco in Catterick on May
25.
Noisy neighbours, traffic, barking dogs, alarms, slamming doors,
loud music or parties can cause irritation, physical and emotional
stress, sleep disturbance and conflict between neighbours.
Research shows noise affects the quality of life of over a quarter
of people in the UK with one million people saying they have moved
because of noisy neighbours.
In Hambleton and Richmondshire Broadacres –
the largest social landlord for the two areas – dealt with 124
cases of noise related nuisance in the last 12 months which amounts
to 50% of all the complaints they
receive.
“Like other areas, Hambleton and
Richmondshire have their fair share of neighbour issues - noise,
parking, boundaries, anti-social behaviour and lifestyle
differences,” said Partnership Chair, Liz Smith.
“At our two events we will be offering
members of the community advice on the options open to them within
our areas for addressing their noise problems. We will take
them through practical and technical assistance to formal noise
investigation options.”
