Nine local community projects have been given almost £50,000 cash boost.

It comes from a funding pot established by North Yorkshire County Council to help Local Strategic Partnerships – including Richmondshire’s - deliver their community strategies by supporting community groups, especially those in the voluntary and community sectors.

Each of the projects awarded grants feed into the Richmondshire Partnership’s priorities –

  • Making Richmondshire a Healthy and Safe Place
  • Developing Richmondshire as an e-District
  • Highlighting Richmondshire as a Place to do Business
  • Enhancing Richmondshire through accessible and sustainable communities

Three local schools were awarded over £13,000 - Brompton on Swale CE Primary School (£9,900) to turn a disused barn into sports changing rooms and an ICT suite; Bainbridge CE Primary School (£2,250) to run an after-school mountain biking club and Barton Primary School (£963) to see if fruit and vegetables can be grown on site to provide kitchen staff with enough fresh produce for daily lunches.

The Hambleton and Richmondshire Community Addiction Service receives £8,840 to provide designated alcohol treatment and counselling support for one day a week in Richmondshire.  Richmondshire Council for Voluntary Services gets £3,000 to help increase the number of volunteer drivers and the Prosperous Communities Task Group was given £3,900 to help promote Richmondshire as a place to do business.

North Yorkshire Credit Union was awarded £8,814;  £10,000 goes to the Richmondshire Walking for Health Initiative to extend the scheme into the Dales; and BlueBoxt Productions Young People’s Live Performance Group gets £1,000.

“It’s fantastic to see money being awarded which will directly benefit our residents and communities,” said Councillor Melva Steckles, Chair of the Richmondshire Local Strategic Partnership and Area Committee member.

“It also guarantees the hard work and dedication of the community and voluntary groups to carry on. We had a vast range of projects applying for funding and we wanted to ensure that we supported as many of them as we could.”
