A new ratings system for food businesses will be launched across Hambleton and Richmondshire this summer.

The scheme will help consumers choose where to eat out or shop for food by rating them from 0 to 5 – 5 for the best and 0 for the worst.

The food hygiene ratings will cover restaurants, pubs, cafes, takeaways and hotels as well as supermarkets and food shops.

And to help businesses understand the Food Standard Agency scheme, eight roadshows are being held in Northallerton, Leyburn, Bedale, Hawes, Richmond, Easingwold, Thirsk and Stokesley from August 1 – 10.

“Whether you are eating out or eating in, the new Food Hygiene Rating Scheme for Hambleton and Richmondshire makes it easier for you to choose places with good hygiene,” said Philip Mepham, Environmental Health Manager.

“The rating each business is given tells you the standards in restaurants, pubs, cafes, takeaways, hotels and other places you eat out in – as well as in supermarkets and other food shops.

“However, food hygiene – and this rating – is not a guide to food quality.”

Once the scheme is launched customers will see window stickers and certificates in businesses showing the rating.   The score is given when a business is inspected by a council food safety officer – it is the rating at the time of the inspection.    One of six scores can be awarded - 0 means urgent improvement is necessary, while 5 means the business was found to have very good hygiene standards.

The roadshows take place on:

August 1: Civic Centre, Northallerton

            2: Thornborough Hall, Leyburn

            3:  Bedale Hall, Bedale

            4: Market House, Hawes

            5: Town Hall, Richmond

            8: Galtres Centre, Easingwold

9: World of James Herriot, Thirsk

           10: Springboard Business Centre, Stokesley

There are slots at 9.30am and 11am at each venue with an extra 1.30pm slot in Thirsk.   To book a place call 0845 1211 555 and speak to environmental health technical support team; or e mail environmentalhealthtechnicalsupport@hambleton.gov.uk
