Householders across
Hambleton and Richmondshire are being encouraged to be good
neighbours this winter – and help clear away snow and
ice.
Leaflets explaining the
government’s ‘snow code’ are being circulated as part of the
Hambleton and Richmondshire Strategic Forums winter weather
campaign.
It gives clear tips on
clearing snow and ice from pavements and open spaces.
“Many people are put off
clearing paths because they are afraid someone will get injured
afterwards,” said Forum Chairman, Rosemary Taylor.
“But people walking on ice
and snow have a responsibility to be careful themselves.
While the County Council will clear main roads and local parish
councils may have additional arrangements locally it is unrealistic
to expect all paths and roads to be cleared.
“We urge people to help each
other and be good neighbours through the winter weather.”
The Snow Code recommends
that it is best to move snow and ice early in the day or when it is
freshly laid so it is not hard packed. By removing the top
layer any sunshine during the day will melt ice
beneath. The path can then be salted before nightfall
to prevent re-freezing. Salt, sand or ash can be used – but
salt found in bins at the roadside must only be used to keep roads
clear. Water should not be used to clear ice and snow as it
can re freeze and cause black ice.
Copies of the leaflets can
be obtained from Partnerships Officer, Peter Cole, on 01609 767212;
from Hambleton and Richmondshire District Council offices.
