Hambleton and Richmondshire Community
Safety Partnership launched their ‘summer drive’ campaign last
weekend with a roadshow in Hawes (pictured).

A series of initiatives aimed at reducing the
number of people killed and seriously injured on local roads will
take place across both districts over the next month.
And together with road safety group, ‘95
Alive’, community safety officers will raise awareness of some of
the most common causes of accidents. They include
everything from drink driving and speeding to the use of mobile
phones while driving, checking child car seats and the importance
of seatbelt wearing.
“Both residents and visitors to the area,
drivers and riders will all be targeted,” said Councillor Michael
Heseltine, Chairman of the Partnership’s Road Safety Group.
“During the summer months our roads are busier
with tourists and local people on days out. There is
generally an increase in social gatherings and public events too
and this can often lead to the opportunity - and temptation - to
have an alcoholic drink. This isn’t an issue, unless people then
get behind the wheel and pose an unacceptable risk to themselves
and everyone else on the road.
“We will adapt our campaign to the area we are
visiting at the time - be that bike safety or general information
on safe driving tips for all other road users.”
He said that the number of people that are
injured or die on the roads can be reduced by following a few
simple rules:
- stay within the speed limit and don’t be distracted when
driving through built up
areas
- plan journeys adding additional time for any delays which may
incur
- check the car is geared up for summer driving - keep the
windscreen wash topped up
- when driving stick to soft drinks and consider nominating a
‘designated’ driver
