Two of Hambleton’s apprentices are
flying high – they have a new qualification and a new
job!

Jason Walsh from Northallerton and Chris
Sharpe from Dalton have passed their apprenticeship with flying
colours - the only two who completed the district council’s six
month scheme run in conjunction with Nordic Pioneer of
Darlington. The remaining six failed to finish the
course.
And as a result they have been offered jobs
with the authority.
The scheme saw eight young men working within
the Waste and Street Scene team – dealing with everything from
street sweeping, collection of dog mess, graffiti removal and
refuse collection to recycling and the removal of fly tipping.
“The benefits of the scheme are that we are
able to engage with and train individuals over a six-month period
and observe them in real workplace activity,” said Street Scene
Manager, John Proud.
“At the end of the six months we can have
confidence in the potential employee instead of the usual short
interview. These two apprentices were outstanding in their
performance, attitude and attendance. And as a result they
are being retained on a one year fixed term contract at our central
depot in Northallerton.”
And David Smith, Development Director from
Nordic Pioneer added: “We are delighted that these two young people
are the first to achieve the NVQ level II in Cleansing and Support
Services in North Yorkshire. It is a credit to Hambleton District
Council that they had the vision to see the value of this programme
and we look forward to working with them in the future.”
Eight new apprentices have now started their
apprenticeship with the Hambleton & Richmondshire Waste &
Street Scene Team.
