Council taxpayers are being urged not
to fall victim to a scam offering tax refunds.
Hambleton and Richmondshire District Councils
are warning their customers to be aware of getting a telephone call
offering them up to £7000 in council tax refund.
“They are asked to give bank account details –
including the full card details and three digit security number in
order to pay the money into their account,” said Revenues Manager,
Ray Gill.
“But this in not to give anyone any refund –
it is to remove money from the account. This
offer may sound too good to be missed but it is a scam and one
which we are urging people not to fall foul of.
“The only officers that will call customers
about council tax payments are from the district councils.”
He said trading standards and the police are
investigating the scam which is working across the UK.
