Owners of handheld computers and modern mobile phones can now access Richmondshire District Council's services on the move.

In the last month alone, the Council's website, richmondshire.gov.uk, received more than a dozen "hits" from people using mobile devices, including five from users of Apple's new iPhone.

But the site's design has in the past made it slow and difficult to read on the small screens used by most mobile phones and handheld computers.

Now the Council has launched a new version of its site, specifically designed to be viewed on mobile devices.

Communications Manager Tom Stirling said: "You shouldn't have to be sitting at your home PC to access your council online. We want to make it as easy and convenient as possible for people to get the services they need.

"For example, a resident might walk past an abandoned vehicle and want to report it straight away. A tourist might arrive in the district and want to look up what attractions are nearby. Or a business owner might spot a vacant industrial unit and want to find out more information about it.

"This is simply another way of accessing our services – of course, you can also phone us on 01748 829100 or call in to one of our Community Offices in person."

All the content in the main site is available through the mobile version, but the layout has been simplified to make it easier to read and navigate on small screens.

The mobile version of the site is at richmondshire.gov.uk/mobile.
